Fuel Cost Calculator

Work out what a trip costs in petrol or diesel — per trip, per kilometre, and across a month of commuting.

Measure it yourself — real city mileage is usually below the brochure figure.
E.g. 22 for a working-day commute.

Step by step

How this is worked out

  1. Enter your distance

One way, then tick return to double it.

  2. Enter your real mileage

Km per litre, measured rather than claimed.

  3. Add today's pump price

Revised regularly, so use the current rate.

  4. Scale to a month

Set trips per month for your commute cost.

Reading the result

Real mileage is not showroom mileage

The figure in the brochure comes from controlled conditions. City driving in Lahore or Karachi — stop-start traffic, long idles, air conditioning running — commonly returns noticeably less, and a car several years old with tired tyres and an overdue service does worse again.

The dependable way to find yours: fill the tank, note the odometer, drive normally for a week, fill again and divide the distance by the litres it took. That number is worth more than any specification sheet.

The commute is the number that matters

A single trip cost looks small. The same trip twice a day, five or six days a week, is a fixed monthly cost comparable to a utility bill. Seeing it monthly is what makes it comparable to the alternatives — a different route, a shared ride, a bike for short runs.

Fuel is not the cost of running a car

Petrol is simply the most visible part. Tyres, oil changes, servicing, insurance, annual token tax and depreciation all continue whether the car moves or not. A per-kilometre figure based on fuel alone understates what driving actually costs, sometimes by half.

Where this stops

Prices are entered rather than built in because they are revised by OGRA on a set schedule and differ between petrol, diesel and high-octane. Use the rate on your last receipt, not a figure from memory.

FAQs

Fuel cost FAQs

How is the fuel cost worked out?

Litres needed = distance ÷ mileage, and cost = litres × price per litre. The cost per kilometre is simply the fuel price divided by your mileage, which is the most useful single number for comparing vehicles or planning a commute.

Where do I find my vehicle's mileage?

Measure it rather than trusting the brochure figure — fill the tank, note the odometer, drive normally, refill, then divide the kilometres covered by the litres added. Real-world mileage in city traffic is usually well below the manufacturer's claim.

Why isn't the fuel price pre-filled?

Petrol and diesel prices in Pakistan are revised by the government on a regular cycle, so any hardcoded figure would be out of date quickly. Enter the current pump price.

Does this cover the total cost of driving?

No — this is fuel only. Running a vehicle also carries insurance, annual token tax, maintenance, tyres and depreciation, which together often exceed fuel over a year. For the tax side, see the Vehicle Registration Advance Tax Calculator.

Can I use it for a CNG or electric vehicle?

For CNG, enter the price per kilogram and your mileage in km per kilogram — the arithmetic is identical. For an electric vehicle, enter the price per kWh and efficiency in km per kWh; the labels will read as litres, but the result is correct.
