Sales Tax (GST) Calculator

Add GST to a net price, or extract GST from a tax-inclusive price — at the standard 18% rate or your own.

Mode
Net price (if adding GST) or gross tax-inclusive price (if extracting).

Step by step

How GST is worked out

  1. Pick add or extract

"Add" builds a price up from net; "extract" breaks a gross price down.

  2. Enter your amount

The net price to add tax to, or the gross price to extract tax from.

  3. Confirm the rate

18% is standard — change it if your goods or service has a different rate.

  4. See the full breakdown

Net, GST amount, and gross, all at once.

Reading the result

Extracting GST is not 18% of the gross

This is the mistake that costs the most money, and it is easy to make. To pull GST out of a tax-inclusive price you divide by 1.18 — you do not take 18% of the gross figure.

On a Rs 11,800 inclusive price the net is Rs 10,000 and the GST is Rs 1,800. Take 18% of Rs 11,800 instead and you get Rs 2,124, overstating the tax by Rs 324 on a single invoice. Repeat that across a month of sales and the return no longer reconciles.

Goods go to FBR, services go to your province

The 18% here is the federal standard rate on goods, charged under the Sales Tax Act 1990. Sales tax on services is a provincial subject: the Sindh Revenue Board, Punjab Revenue Authority, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Revenue Authority and Balochistan Revenue Authority each set their own rates and their own registration. A Lahore consultancy and a Karachi consultancy can bill the same work at different rates.

If you are invoicing services rather than goods, the provincial services tax calculator is the right tool.

Where this stops

It converts between net and gross at one rate. It does not know whether your item is zero-rated, exempt, on the Third Schedule (taxed on printed retail price rather than your sale price), or subject to a reduced rate, and it does not net input tax against output tax — that is the return, not the invoice.

FAQs

Sales tax / GST FAQs

What is the standard GST/sales tax rate?

The standard General Sales Tax rate in Pakistan is 18% on most goods, though some categories (e.g. certain services by province, or specific goods) can have reduced or different rates. This calculator defaults to 18%, editable.

What is the difference between "Add GST" and "Extract GST"?

"Add" starts from a net (pre-tax) price and adds GST on top to find the gross price. "Extract" starts from a GST-inclusive gross price and works out how much of it is tax versus the net value.

Who charges provincial sales tax vs federal GST?

Goods are generally taxed under the federal Sales Tax Act, while services are taxed by provincial revenue authorities (e.g. PRA, SRB, KPRA) at their own notified rates — check which applies to your transaction.

Is GST the same as income tax?

No — GST is a consumption tax on the sale of goods/services, charged on top of the price, separate from income tax on your profits.
