Gold nisab and silver nisab are not close
Nisab is fixed in weight, not in rupees: 7.5 tola of gold or 52.5 tola of silver. Because the two metals have moved apart over the last century, the rupee value of the silver threshold is now far below the gold one.
That difference decides who pays at all. A household with modest savings can be above the silver nisab and below the gold nisab at the same moment. Choose silver and they owe Zakat; choose gold and they owe nothing.
Which to use
Many scholars in Pakistan favour the silver nisab on the reasoning that the lower threshold benefits the recipient and brings more wealth into circulation. Others hold that gold better reflects what the original threshold represented in purchasing power. Both positions are held by serious people; this is a question for the scholar you follow, not for a calculator.
Why no rupee figure is built in
The threshold moves with the metal price, so any number hardcoded here would be stale within days and would be quoted back as though it were authoritative. Use today's rate from a source you trust — a local bullion dealer or the jewellers' association rate for your city.
Where this stops
Nisab decides whether Zakat is due. It does not decide how much: that is 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth, and it is calculated on the whole amount, not only on the portion above the threshold.
FAQs
Nisab threshold FAQs
What is nisab?
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must hold before Zakat becomes obligatory. It's fixed as a weight of gold or silver, so its rupee value moves with today's metal price.
Why are there two different nisab values?
Islamic law sets nisab at 87.48 grams of gold (7.5 tola) or 612.36 grams of silver (52.5 tola). Since gold is usually far more valuable per gram than silver, the silver-based nisab works out to a much lower rupee figure.
Which nisab standard should I use?
Many scholars recommend using the (lower) silver-based nisab for cash and mixed assets, since it brings more people into paying Zakat and benefits recipients more. Holdings that are purely gold are traditionally measured against the gold-based nisab. This tool shows both — confirm which applies to you with a scholar.
Where do I find today's gold and silver price?
Check a local jeweller, your city's gold/Sarafa market rate, or a live precious-metals price source. We don't hardcode a figure here since it changes daily.
